Living Life in The Moment – Grand Canyon Vacations
I've figured out how to slow down time...
Ok that might be a little dramatic, but that's exactly how I felt over three days in the Grand Canyon.
I had a very different birthday this year. My birthday did not include texts, Facebook notifications, Instagram collages or multiple tweets. And I promise it's not because I lost all my friends over the past year. But I did lose one thing, complete contact with the rest of the world because we had zero cell phone service throughout our trip.
Don't get me wrong, like anyone else on the planet, all the texts and notifications on your birthday definitely make me happy each year. But this year I didn't have that.
What I did have was fully committed, 100% in the moment, family time. Without our cell phones, everyone was engaged in the many conversations we had. We spent three days without a schedule, without everyone's noses in their phones and time really did slow down. It felt like we were on the trip for a week when it was only a few days.
Having no cell phone for such a short amount of time made me realize how much time I do spend on my phone. I check social media and email a countless number of times a day and texts are never ending. I think we all believe we're much more important than we really are. That sounds harsh, I know. But trust me, your world will continue turning if you don't look at your phone once during a dinner with friends.
Without checking your social media multiple times a day, you can enjoy YOUR day on YOUR time. And trust me, time will slow down. My mom and stepdad gave me the gift of being completely present. In today's world, that's basically impossible. It was a priceless gift.
I hope I can carry the practice of being in the moment into my everyday life and I'll encourage the people around me to do the same. You'll be amazed at what you're missing when your head is down and your mind is buried in your phone. And you don't have to be in the Grand Canyon to be in the moment, you can do this anywhere. It's your life, start living it to the fullest.
