Rafting trips on the Colorado River

River Rafting Creates Big Appetites and Deep Slumber

After a day on the rafts, sandy beaches provide welcome camping spots. Western spares no effort to make camp cuisine the most comfortable and delicious as any outfitter on any river. Even though you are miles from civilization, that's no excuse for freeze-dried food. While you're getting your sleeping bag spread out -- and maybe enjoying a riverside cocktail -- the guides exchange their life jackets for aprons as the sun goes down, stirring up amazing menus of fresh fish or meat with Western flair, served with crisp salads and fresh vegetables - all topped off with surprising deserts like a Dutch-oven up-side-down cake. Fireside tales and songs last until your energy drains.

Every Western River Expedition guest is provided a waterproof gear bag, top quality sleeping bag, comfortable folding cot, deluxe tent, and ground cloth. While many people enjoy sleeping under the constellations, some prefer a little protection overhead. Either way, this is camping in comfort.

Sun-up begins with a hearty breakfast of fresh fruit, juice, eggs, pancakes, French toast, and bacon or sausage. Coffee and hot chocolate are always welcome warmers as the sun peaks over the canyon rim.

At noon, the guides spread out their famous luncheon smorgasbord of deli meats, cheeses and breads. You'll be surprised how deft your fellow travelers become at balancing a stack of coldcuts, pickles, tomatoes, chips and cookies.

All rafts carry a ready supply of cold lemonade and cold water to keep thirsts quenched. When the guides offer treats of candy bars and fruit, guests respond as if they been on survival training!

Guest Comments » The Best Rafting Vacations in the West!

I enjoyed the breathtaking scenery and the pristine surroundings. I think Desolation Canyon is misnamed - it’s beautiful - but perhaps that name is good to keep too many people from "discovering" it. From the wonderful, eye-popping flight over the canyons, the wildlife sightings, the light on the canyon walls (especially early morning and late in the day), to the lovely campsites - it was hard to absorb so much natural beauty. The surroundings helped me to unsnarl my thoughts, relax into serenity, and remember what’s important in life. Susan - Washington DC
