Rafting Idaho's Salmon River is Spirited Adventure
Western River Expeditions teams up with Action Whitewater Adventures
to run both the Main Salmon and
the Middle Fork. On the
Main, there is always another stretch of whitewater running through
the Idaho Primitive Area. Rich in scenic wonders and history,
the Main Salmon is a favorite challenge with many rapids, including
those with tough reputations like Big Mallard and Whiplash. The
blue-green waters, known as the "River of No Return,"
also have some calmer sections where there is time to relax and
absorb the country's splendor. As the river gushes on, it doubles
its size into a rushing river with major rapids. The cold waters
of the Salmon run through the heart of the largest roadless wilderness
in the lower 48 states. It's a country of pines and granite mountains
where rock paintings left by the ancient settlers still exist.
On the Middle Fork, where homesteaders and miners once carved
out their precarious existence, the river traces its route. It
is an area of natural wonders and home to elk, mountain goats
and big horn sheep. Beginning in the spectacular Sawtooth Mountains
of Idaho, the first miles are small and clear-running through
chutes and channels.
Each day on the Middle Fork is filled with natural wonders, ranging
from hot springs, relics left by early homesteaders and miners,
and visits to view ancient pictographs left by early Indians.
In early season, high water is suited for the hearty adventurer.
By July, moderate technical whitewater is good for all experience
levels. July is also the season for the up-river Salmon run, so
fishing is good, to say the least, through to September.. You
can choose your own level of involvement by riding on a comfortable
18 foot raft piloted by an experienced guide, or chart your own
course in a paddle boat or inflatable kayak.
A once-in-a-lifetime adventure, experience
astounding views of hidden waterfalls, ancient Indian
ruins, lush hanging gardens, and magnificent overlooks.
Raft the best whitewater on the Colorado River and
savor calm moments on the river to reflect and renew.
