If you have a passion for the outdoors, Moab, Utah is the playground you've been looking for. Moab is surrounded by some of the most dramatic, diverse, and exciting terrain in the world. Known for its expansive collection of rocky cliffs, and bizarre rock formations, Arches National Park is only five miles from downtown Moab. Over 2,000 arches are found within the 120 square miles of this natural wonder. You can't help but feel impressed by the astounding geological formations that surround you, such as colossal sandstone fins, massive balanced rocks, and soaring pinnacles and spires.
For those seeking solitude you can do no better than hiking into the backcountry of Canyonlands National Park. Located just 35 miles from Moab, it's the largest park in Utah. Wide open expanses of wilderness are becoming harder to find in the U.S., but there's no shortage here. The Island in the Sky district of the park sits high atop a massive mesa. Paved roads lead you to some of the most spectacular views in southeastern Utah. You can explore the park on foot, by car, or by guided boat tour.
A short distance from the Island in the Sky is Dead Horse Point State Park. Towering two thousand feet above the Colorado River, this park provides a unique and breath-taking panorama of the canyon country below, which has has been carved out over thousands of years by the relentless Colorado River.
When you need to cool off, Moab provides an abundance of refreshing river recreation. You can choose between a wide range of these water activities. Ranging from rafting the wild and powerful swells at Cataract Canyon, to just playing around in the more easily accessible sections of the Colorado and Green Rivers.
Westwater Canyon has numerous class IV rapids to throw even the most experienced boaters. The very popular "daily stretch" of the river offers plenty of excitement for those looking for a less intense whitewater experience. While the area is known for its whitewater trips, there are also several scenic calm water segments, suitable for canoes and kayaks. Individuals and groups may raft the river on their own, or with one of the many qualified guides.
If you are looking for something a little different to experience, try canyoneering. Through the use of ropes and basic climbing skills, you can open up a realm of beautiful possibilities. Canyoneering allows you to explore the hidden gems of southern Utah. Whether you are a beginner or an expert, Moab canyoneering guides can take you into some of the most awe-inspiring canyons and chasms in the world.
If you feel the need for speed, visit the mountain biking capital of the world, and explore the trails that changed the sport forever. From scenic trails for beginners that wander through beautiful canyons and mesa tops, to highly technical trails such as the Slickrock Bike Trail, considered by many to be the ultimate mountain biking experience. There's a vast array of trails, sure to please any biking enthusiast.
A less strenuous way to explore the Slickrock area, is by Jeep and Hummer tour. There are many skilled tour guides that will take you over challenging obstacles, into the most spectacular spots on the trail.
To round off the vast array of adventures available in the Moab area, are the La Sal Mountains. Located just south of town, the La Sals allow you to get into another ecosystem altogether.
