Mile 238 - Engineer’s Camp

During the 1950s and into the 1960s the U.S. government had plans to build a dam in the lower reaches of Grand Canyon. The 700 foot tall Bridge Canyon Dam (Hualapai Dam), if built, would have backed up water nearly 100 miles to Kanab Creek. Opposition to the dam, beginning with environmental groups such as the Sierra Club, eventually spread to a large part of the american public and to key politicians who were able to halt its construction. The remnants of the camp where engineers and other workers stayed during the initial phases of construction still remain and are visible from river level.
