The Rogue River bursts from a lava tube, and, well, cascades down the steep upper slopes of the Cascade Range and then mellows to a runnable pace on its approach to the Pacific Ocean. Along its course, it carves out the Rogue River Gorge, where river runners, fishermen, and other recreationalists gather to partake in its energy. Wildlife abounds in this forested region, and finds the river just as inviting. Despite human presence seals and other marine life from the Pacific Ocean begin to appear the closer one floats to the coastline where river meets ocean. The Rogue River was among the first rivers selected under the "Wild & Scenic Rivers" Act of 1968. Several lodges and homesteads along the Rogue were "grandfathered in" as part of the history and charm of the river gorge.
