Rafting the Grand Canyon Was a Trip of a Lifetime, and That’s Not a Cliche.

I have wanted to get down in the Grand Canyon since I first saw it as a 19-year-old standing at the South Rim in 1970. It took an invitation from my best friend to get me there. Her son-in-law selected Western River Expeditions, so I have no idea what went into the decision, but I can't see how the experience could have been better.
The run up to our launch was assisted by very good staff in the Western River Expeditions office. They were helpful and answered all of my many questions patiently and expertly. I was well prepared for the trip. From Marble Canyon and mile 0 to the Whitmore Wash helipad, the trip was breathtaking, challenging and educational.
Our Western guides, Mark, Joe, Martin and Jason, were knowledgeable and highly skilled boat drivers. I felt safe, even in the most difficult of rapids and climbing up to the Patio. I wish I had signed on to do the whole run, but that will be a trip for another year.
The food was outstanding, too. In addition to spending 8 hours a day on the river, these four energetic men made gourmet breakfasts, hearty lunches, and dinners that were on par with a nice sit-down restaurant. And they had to setup and cleanup after each meal.
Remarkable experience, remarkable guides. With the Grand Canyon as the centerpiece of the expedition, it was indeed a trip of a lifetime.
