The trip we took at the beginning of August was one of the top10 trips we have taken... and I have visited 38 countries. The entire trip from starting point in Las Vegas to the Helicopter ride out from the base of the Grand Canyon was professional and well managed. Ben, Lat, Shelby, and Poco were terrific guides that knew the history and geology of the canyon which made the trip that much more enjoyable. These guides are just really good people too and a joy to be around.

Safety was a prime consideration and they communicated the day itinerary and expectations clearly. The food was first-rate...awesome breakfasts, quality ingredients for making our own lunches, and crab, steak, shrimp, fajitas, etc. for dinner. Great Western adventures supplied tents, sleeping bags, cots, chairs, and even good portable latrines for camp each evening. And of course, the scenery is hard is unprecedented.

The trip starts at Lees Ferry about 600 ft below the rim of the canyon and then the Colorado cuts through the canyon as the canyon slowly rises above until at the end,188 miles later, the canyon rim is nearly 7000 ft above the river. The side hikes to Redwall Cavern, Havasu Canyon, Elves Chasm, and Deer Creek falls were a great way to cool off, play some frisbee, and just absorb the beauty of these remote jewels. I thought riding down Colorado on 20,000 lb motorized rafts wouldn't offer any real excitement but was I wrong? The power of the river is awesome and riding up on the front of the raft gives one real respect for that. Crystal, Lava Falls, Hermit Granite, and Sockdolager are just some of the wild rides we experienced.
