The nature aspect of the trip is as perfect as expected. The Adventure Quotient was exhilarating and as professionally led as you would expect. Again, expectations. Being met. But it was the Human Experience that I found to be so surprising and so deeply satisfying.
22 of us, and I knew 4 of them, so 17 individuals I knew from nobody became trusted and respected friends in the space of 4 days. A few I did not speak with very much, we all tend to "sit in the same place" and I'm sorry for that. But people, especially in slightly threatening situations, tend to illustrate their character through actions and decisions that I found incredibly heartening. The experience gave me great hope in our task and purpose as American citizens. Corny as that might sound.
Our guides cannot be overlooked. They are confident, competent, and professional in every respect. They always provide for our safety and depth of experience and are respectful of and vigilant in promoting and protecting the River's integrity.
Our lodge experiences were greatly enhanced by staff; always ready to accommodate, always friendly and ever positive.
I don't know if it's the people who bring life to the River or the River that brings depth and presence to the people, but somehow, those two things made for a very illuminating and resonant experience that I am extremely grateful to have had in my life.
