6 Days Over The Rainbow – Grand Canyon Rafting

“There’s this River”, a collection of Grand Canyon stories by Christa Sadler, tells of a blind lady who, together with other handicapped persons, participated in a rafting trip through the Grand Canyon. When asked how she liked the trip she replied enthusiastically: “All this time I have SEEN a rainbow”.

In August 2013, my wife Annelore and I made a 6 Day Grand Canyon River Trip with Western River Expeditions. For Annelore it was the second, for me the fifth trip, all with Western River Expeditions. This time, however, it was different as we had the privilege and great joy to make this trip together with the D’Arrigo family and friends.

Andy D’Arrigo, a river veteran and my friend since we met at previous trips, had assembled family members from various parts of the USA: three generations D’Arrigos, above all the incredible, adorable Mary Jane, the 87- year old mother and grandmother.

Our trip through the Grand Canyon, this wonderland of stone, water and light, was filled with warmth and friendliness, thanks to the D’Arrigo family, thus making the adventure even more enjoyable. Many thanks, Andy, to you and your wonderful family.

The backbone, as always, was Western River’s perfect organization and the attendance of our excellent guides Lucky, Stephen, Justin and Nick. Especially on this trip my high regard for them has risen to the greatest admiration. Western River can be truly proud of their guides!

Among the countless happy moments during the trip is one sad one. That is when jumping off the boat for the last time and saying farewell to the other guests, the river and the canyon. The only consolation is the hope for another trip and the memory of a fantastic adventure.

Of course, we have photos and films from the river.  But no photo and no video can convey what this trip really meant to us. So we lean back and close the eyes. And then we can SEE it too:  the rainbow.

Das Buch „There's this River“ erzaehlt von einer blinden Frau, die – zusammen mit anderen behinderten Personen - einen Rafting Trip durch den Grand Canyon gemacht hat. Gefragt, wie sie den Trip erlebt habe, sagte sie voll Freude und Begeisterung: „Die ganze Zeit habe ich einen Regenbogen GESEHEN“!

Im August 2013 unternahmen meine Frau Annelore und ich einen 6-Tage River Trip durch den Grand Canyon. Fuer Annelore war es der zweite, fuer mich der fuenfte Trip, alle mit Western River. Wir hatten das Privileg und die grosse Freude, diesen Trip zusammen mit der D'Arrigo Familie erleben zu duerfen.

Andy D'Arrigo, ein River Veteran und Freund von frueheren Trips, hatte fast seine ganze Familie aus allen Teilen der USA zu diesem Trip versammelt: drei Generationen D'Arrigos. Allen voran die unglaubliche und bewundernswerte „gran“ Mary Jane, die 87-jaehrige Mutter und Grossmutter.

Unsere Reise durch den Grand Canyon, diese Maerchenwelt aus Stein, Wasser und Licht, war eingebettet in eine Wolke aus Herzlichkeit und Freundschaft durch die D'Arrigo Familie, welche das Abenteuer „Grand Canyon“ verzauberte.

Den Hintergrund bildete die wie immer perfekte Organisation durch Western River und die Betreuung durch unsere exzellenten Guides Lucky, Stephen, Justin und Nick. Gerade auf diesem Trip hat sich mein ohnehin hoechster Respekt fuer sie zu ehrlicher Bewunderung gesteigert. Western River ist zu Recht stolz auf seine Guides!

Unter den tausenden gluecklichen gibt es auch einen einzigen traurigen Moment auf dem Trip: dann, wenn Du das letzte Mal vom Boot springst und Abschied nehmen musst von den Gefaehrten, vom Fluss und vom Canyon. Als Trost bleiben die Hoffnung auf einen naechsten Trip und Erinnerungen an das phantastische Abenteuer.

Natuerlich haben wir Fotos und Filme vom River mitgebracht. Aber kein Foto, kein Video kann ausdruecken, was dieser Trip wirklich fuer uns war.

Darum lehnen wir uns zurueck und schliessen die Augen. Und dann SEHEN wir ihn auch: den Regenbogen.
