Planning Your Travel

Know Before You Go

These insights from the Western River team are candid considerations for this trip. We believe in being transparent so you can choose the best trip for you and your loved ones.

  • Physical Readiness & Participation

Plan for active paddling, getting into and out of rafts, and walking rainforest trails and hanging bridges. Rafting out has a minimum age of 12, plus operator size and physical requirements. Discuss swimming confidence, mobility, and any concerns before booking. Pacuare Lodge’s guides make the final participation decision based on the guests and river conditions.

  • Passports & Travel Documents

A valid passport is required for international travel to Costa Rica. Check current entry requirements for your nationality with the Costa Rican authorities and your airline. Bring a valid passport or passport copy for the Manuel Antonio National Park tour.

  • The Elements: Heat, Rain and Sun

Expect warm, humid conditions and rain during your trip. Weather varies between the Pacuare’s Caribbean slope, Arenal, and the Pacific coast. Pack light rain gear, sun protection, and quick-drying clothing. Rainfall can change river levels and rafting arrangements.

  • Rafting & River Travel

You raft on Days 2 and 4 with Pacuare Lodge’s guides. Arrival rafting has Class II–III rapids; departure rafting includes Class III–IV whitewater. Follow the operator’s equipment and participation instructions. Rafting is subject to river conditions and the guides’ assessment; do not assume swimming stops will be offered.

  • Money, Bugs & Health

Bring insect repellent and discuss destination-specific health advice with a travel-health professional before departure. Check current public-health guidance rather than assuming any area is free of mosquito-borne illness. Budget for meals outside the listed inclusions, gratuities, drinks, and personal purchases.

  • What Happens After Booking

Western River books the nine-day itinerary through Böëna Lodges and its listed local suppliers. Review your confirmed services, lodging, meeting instructions, packing guidance, and payment and cancellation terms. Wait for confirmation of availability and transfer timing before purchasing flights.

Meeting in San Jose, Costa Rica

Fly into Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO), serving San José. The itinerary includes a private arrival transfer to Hotel Grano de Oro. Confirm your flight details and meeting instructions in advance, and allow time to settle in before the next morning’s shared transfer to the river.

  • Flying Into San Jose (SJO)

Fly into Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO). The itinerary includes a private transfer from the airport to the San José area. Confirm flight details and the exact meeting instructions in advance, with time to settle in before the next morning’s shared river transfer.

  • Your First Night

Your first night is at Hotel Grano de Oro, with à la carte breakfast included. Other meals are separate. The following morning, a shared transfer takes you from San José to the Pacuare River put-in.

Pacuare Lodge sits beside the river in tropical rainforest. You stay two nights, with a full day between rafting in and rafting out. The Full Experience arrangement includes dining and a choice of in-house activities, subject to scheduling and participation requirements. Rooms do not have air conditioning. Spa treatments and optional extras are separate.

  • How intense is the rafting?

The arrival rafting has Class II–III rapids. The departure trip continues through Class III–IV whitewater and requires active paddling and attention to guide instructions. Rainfall affects flows. Pacuare Lodge’s guides assess river conditions and guest suitability and may adjust rafting arrangements.

  • What is included, and what is not?

The itinerary includes eight nights at four properties, shared rafting into and out of Pacuare Lodge, its Full Experience arrangement, shared guided visits to Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges and Manuel Antonio National Park, and the listed transfers. Meals are included during the Pacuare stay, with breakfast at the other hotels. • Can I customize or shorten the itinerary?

This page describes the nine-day itinerary offered through Western River. Changes or shorter versions are not included in this offer. Contact Western River with questions about the published route before making travel arrangements.

  • What is the minimum age?

Pacuare Lodge’s minimum age for rafting out is 12, so guests following this raft-in, raft-out itinerary must meet that requirement. Size, mobility, physical condition, and river conditions also affect participation. Discuss your group with Western River before booking; the operator’s guides make the final decision.

  • What should I pack, and do I need a passport?

Bring a valid passport and check current entry requirements for your nationality before departure. Pack quick-drying clothing, sun protection, insect repellent, light rain gear, and the footwear specified by the rafting operator. Closed-toe shoes are required at Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges. Bring a passport or passport copy for the Manuel Antonio National Park tour.

  • When is the best time to go?

Ask about availability for the dates that work for your group. Weather varies across the itinerary: the Pacuare’s Caribbean slope can be rainy even when the Pacific coast is in a drier period. Plan for warmth, humidity, and rain, and allow for rafting adjustments when river conditions require them.

  • What should I know about health and participation?

Rafting and rainforest activities involve risks and physical demands. Review the operator’s participation requirements, follow guide instructions, and discuss any health or mobility concerns before booking. Bring insect repellent and consult a travel-health professional about current recommendations for your itinerary. Check current public-health advice rather than relying on general assurances about mosquito-borne illness.

  • Can we book this privately for our group?

Contact Western River to discuss your group size and dates. The quoted itinerary includes shared rafting and guided activities as well as private transfers. A private group booking does not automatically provide exclusive rafting, tours, or use of Pacuare Lodge. Any private arrangements require separate availability and pricing confirmation.
