Motorized Grand Canyon Rafting Trips

A motorized Grand Canyon rafting trip lets you cover more Colorado River miles in fewer days without giving up what makes the canyon unforgettable: legendary whitewater, side-canyon hikes, nights on the beach, and days completely immersed below the rim. Every Grand Canyon trip Western operates travels aboard our exclusive J-Rig, a guide-operated motorized raft designed specifically for the Grand Canyon.

Choose a 3- or 4-day trip through the lower 92 miles of Grand Canyon, or spend 6 or 7 days rafting 188 miles from Lees Ferry to the Whitmore Wash helipad. You don’t paddle. The guides operate the raft, so you can take in the canyon between rapids and hold on when the whitewater arrives. Western has been guiding Grand Canyon trips since 1961.

Why Guests Choose Motorized Trips

  • More canyon in fewer days. Cover 188 river miles in 6 to 7 days, or experience the lower 92 miles in 3 to 4 days.
  • No paddling required. Your guides operate the raft. No previous rafting experience is needed.
  • Choose how you ride. From the wettest, wildest spot up front to more protected seating farther back.

What Motorized Rafting Means in the Grand Canyon

Being aboard a motorized raft changes how efficiently you travel between stops. A quiet four-stroke motor moves the J-Rig through long stretches of calm water, allowing you to cover more river miles each day while still making time for side hikes, waterfalls, and other stops along the way.

You still run major whitewater, camp along the river, explore side canyons, hike to hidden waterfalls, enjoy freshly prepared meals, and sleep beneath the stars. And while you won’t be paddling, this is still an active wilderness trip. You'll hold on tight through the rapids and explore the canyon on foot.

Motorized vs Oar-Powered: Compare Grand Canyon Trips

Both motorized and oar-powered trips can be extraordinary ways to experience the Grand Canyon. The biggest differences are time, pace, and the boat itself. Motorized rafts cover more miles each day; oar-powered trips move more slowly and generally require more days to cover comparable mileage.

FEATURE MOTORIZED J-RIG OAR-POWERED
PROPULSION Guide-operated quiet four-stroke motor Guide rows the raft with oars
GUEST PADDLING No paddling required Typically no paddling on an oar-only trip
PACE Covers more river miles each day Slower pace with more days on the river
188-MILE ROUTE 6 or 7 days with Western Often about twice as long, depending on outfitter and itinerary
BOAT EXPERIENCE 37' x 18' J-Rig with multiple seating zones Smaller raft; configuration varies by outfitter
BEST FIT Travelers who want extensive canyon mileage in 3–7 days Travelers with more time who prefer a slower river pace

Why Western's J-Rig Feels Different

Western’s J-Rig is a 37-foot by 18-foot raft built on five pontoons, with a split frame, a quiet four-stroke motor, and three distinct seating areas. It carries 14-18 guests and gives you a choice of experiencing the river- from the most thrilling and wettest spot up front to the more protected and tamer seating in the aft section. There is a spot for everyone.

Created by Western River founder Jack Currey and refined over more than six decades, the J-Rig remains exclusive to Western River Expeditions. Want to see how the design works, where guests sit, and what happens when it meets a Grand Canyon rapid?

"The most comfortable boats in Grand Canyon."

★★★★★

I have done 11 whitewater rafting trips with Western... they have the most comfortable boats in Grand Canyon, the food is excellent, and the logistics are left up to them. I just show up with a small duffle and they provide the rest.

Motorized Trip Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a motorized Grand Canyon rafting trip?

A motorized rafting trip is any Grand Canyon trip on a raft powered by an outboard motor. These trips allow the raft to cover more of the river each day, making Western’s 188-mile route possible in six or seven days.

  • How long are motorized trips compared to oar-powered?

Western’s motorized trips run 3, 4, 6, or 7 days. The 6- and 7-day trips cover 188 miles from Lees Ferry to the Whitmore Wash helipad. Comparable oar-powered itineraries generally take substantially longer, often roughly twice as many days, depending on the outfitter and route.

  • Is a motorized trip less adventurous than an oar trip?

You still run Lava Falls, Hermit, and Crystal, camp on the same beaches, and hike the same side canyons. The primary difference is how the raft moves between those experiences. A motorized trip covers more distance each day; an oar-powered trip moves at a slower pace and generally spends more days on the river.

  • What should I know about the big rapids on a motorized raft?

The J-Rig’s wide, five-pontoon design gives guides a substantial platform for running Grand Canyon whitewater. Western has guided this river since 1961, and Grand Canyon guides receive extensive training before taking responsibility for guests. Before major rapids, your guide explains what to expect, where to sit, and what to do.

  • Which Western River motorized trip is right for me?

Short on time or traveling with children age 9+: start with the 3-Day River Trip or add a night at Bar 10 Ranch with the 4-Day River & Ranch Trip. For the 188-mile route from Lees Ferry to Whitmore Wash helipad, choose the 6-Day Signature Expedition for the widest selection of dates or the 7-Day if you want one additional night in the canyon.

  • When can you run motorized trips in the Grand Canyon?

National Park Service regulations allow motorized commercial river trips to launch from April 1 through September 15. Western schedules its Grand Canyon departures within that window, with specific months varying by trip.

  • Can I do part of the canyon with a helicopter in or out?

Yes. The 3- and 4-day trips helicopter into the canyon at the Whitmore Wash helipad at river mile 188. The 6- and 7-day trips travel from Lees Ferry to that same point and then helicopter out to Bar 10 Ranch. The 3- and 4-day trips continue downstream from the river by raft and then jet boat to Pearce Ferry.

  • Can I raft the entire Grand Canyon on a motorized raft trip with Western?

Yes, if you plan ahead, Western can help you link an upper-canyon trip with a lower-canyon trip so you can experience the entire Grand Canyon in 8 to 9 days.
