92 Miles Through the Lower Grand Canyon in Three Days

If you want to experience the Grand Canyon from the Colorado River but don't have a full week, the 3-Day trip gets you remarkably deep into the experience in a short time. Fly across the desert, descend by helicopter to the river at Whitmore Wash, then spend three days rafting 92 miles through the Lower Grand Canyon and two nights camping beside the Colorado.

Once you're on the river, the perspective changes completely. Canyon walls rise around you, whitewater breaks up long stretches of calmer water, and stops along the way give you opportunities to explore places that most Grand Canyon visitors never see from the rim.

Your guides navigate the river aboard Western River's exclusive J-Rigs, explain what to expect before rapids, prepare meals, lead shore excursions, and manage the details of camp and river travel. You get the immersion of a multi-day Grand Canyon river trip without having to plan the expedition yourself or devote a full week to it.

Grand Canyon 3-Day Itinerary

Over three days, you'll travel 92 river miles through the Lower Grand Canyon from Whitmore Wash toward Pearce Ferry. The exact camps, hikes, and timing vary with river conditions, weather, and the group, but the trip consistently combines whitewater, side-canyon exploration, two river camps, and the jet boat exit on the last day.

DAY 1

Into the Canyon

Your trip starts in Las Vegas with a motorcoach to Boulder City, followed by a scenic flight over Hoover Dam to Bar 10 Ranch. From there, a helicopter carries you into the Grand Canyon at Whitmore Wash, where your guides and J-Rig are waiting. By afternoon, you’re on the Colorado River, running your first Lower Canyon rapids, including Kolb and Mile 209, before pulling into a riverside camp for dinner and your first night beneath the canyon sky.

DAY 2

A Full Day on the River

Wake beside the Colorado and settle into a full day through Lower Granite Gorge, which is the most rapid-dense section. Your guides may also stop for a side-canyon hike, waterfalls, pools, or time around Pumpkin Springs, depending on conditions. By evening, you’ll pull into another riverside camp for dinner and one more night under the stars.

DAY 3

Last Morning in the Canyon

After breakfast, spend your final morning on the Colorado as the canyon gradually begins to widen. A jet boat carries you downstream to the Pearce Ferry takeout, where you transfer to a motorcoach for the return to Las Vegas. The drive passes Hoover Dam and the Mike O’Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge before arriving back in Las Vegas by mid-afternoon.

Your Grand Canyon Raft

Western River's exclusive J-Rig raft is approximately 37 feet long and 18 feet wide, with room for 14 to 18 guests plus guides. Three seating areas let you choose how you experience the river, from wetter seats closer to the action to more protected areas farther back. A quiet four-stroke motor moves the raft efficiently through calm water between rapids, leaving more time for hikes, stops, and camp. Discover why it is unlike any other raft on the river.

Grand Canyon 3-Day Reviews

"Trip of a Lifetime, Second Time Around"
Just finished the 3-day rafting trip through the Grand Canyon with Western River Expeditions. It's so fabulous this was my 2nd time doing the trip! The helicopter ride down to the river is a definite highlight. On the river, the scenery is majestic and spectacular, waterfall hike, Pumpkin Springs, the rapids. I loved sleeping under the stars.

"Beyond Imagination"
We just got back from a 3-day trip with our boys (14 and 11), and it's like we stepped out of a dream. From soaring in a plane to a breathtaking helicopter descent into the canyon, the whole experience was mind-blowing. We rafted wild rapids, hiked to stunning waterfalls, and shared incredible meals. Photos and videos can't capture the magic.

"Perfect Duration for Families"
We went on a 3-day trip on the Colorado River as a family of four with 2 kids, 11 and 13. This was the perfect duration for us and just long enough to get a great variety of views and activities, but brief enough that I didn't get tired of being disconnected. The guides on this trip are top-notch, and the food was really, really good.

"Worth Every Penny"
Western River might not be the cheapest option, but every part of this trip was awesome, memorable, and worth every penny.

Planning Your Travel

Know Before You Go

A Grand Canyon river trip is an active wilderness experience, and knowing what to expect makes it easier to decide whether this trip fits you and your group. The 3-Day trip is shorter than Western River's 6- and 7-Day trips, but you'll still be getting on and off the raft, camping outdoors, experiencing whitewater, and spending three days in a remote desert environment.

  • Physical Readiness & Participation

You do not need previous rafting or camping experience, but you should be comfortable participating actively throughout the trip. Guests need to be able to get on and off the J-Rig, walk over sand, rocks, and uneven shoreline, carry their personal river bag to camp, securely grip the raft's handholds through whitewater, and follow guide instructions.

Getting on and off the J-Rig can require stepping or climbing two to three feet over the front of the raft while it is next to shore. Camp locations also vary, so walking through deep sand or over rocky ground is part of the experience. If you have questions about a medical condition, mobility, or whether the trip is a good fit, talk with Western River before booking.

  • Hiking & Side-Canyon Exploration

Stops away from the raft are one of the highlights of traveling through Grand Canyon. Depending on river conditions, weather, timing, and the group, guides may lead short walks or hikes into side canyons, to waterfalls, pools, springs, or other points of interest.

Most side hikes are optional, and their length and difficulty vary. Even if you choose not to take a longer hike, you still need enough mobility to get on and off the raft and move over uneven shoreline when the group stops. Secure footwear that can handle wet, rocky, and sandy terrain is important.

  • Rapids & Swimming Ability

The Lower Grand Canyon combines stretches of calm water with active whitewater. Before significant rapids, your guides explain what to expect, how to position yourself, and where to hold on. The J-Rig also has different seating areas, allowing you to choose more or less exposure to waves and spray.

Life jackets are required whenever you're on the river. You do not need to be an expert swimmer, but you should be able to move your arms and legs, follow instructions, and actively help yourself toward the raft or shore if you unexpectedly enter the water.

  • Camping & Sleeping

You'll spend two nights camping beside the Colorado River. Western River provides a cot, sleeping bag with sheets, camp chair, and tent. Many guests choose to sleep under the stars when weather allows, while tents are available for those who prefer them.

Camps are selected along the river and vary from night to night. Some are sandy, while others include rocks or uneven ground. You'll carry your personal gear to your campsite and set up your sleeping area, with guides showing first-time campers how everything works.

  • Bathrooms & Hygiene

There are no permanent bathrooms or showers once you're on the river. At camp, guides set up a portable toilet system in a private location away from the main camping area. During the day, the group makes stops along the river as needed.

There are no showers during the two river nights. Guests can rinse off in the Colorado River, and your packing information explains what to bring for basic personal hygiene in camp.

  • Heat, Cold Water, & Weather

The temperature difference between the desert air and the Colorado River can be significant. Summer afternoons at river level can be very hot, while the river remains cold enough to feel refreshing, and often quite cool when you get wet.

Sun protection, hydration, lightweight quick-drying clothing, and appropriate layers all matter. Spring and September generally bring more moderate air temperatures, while July and August can bring intense heat and occasional monsoon storms. Weather can change quickly, so come prepared for sun, wind, rain, and changing temperatures rather than expecting the same conditions all three days.

See the Weather page for the Grand Canyon

  • The Group Experience

3-Day departures accommodate up to 28 guests, typically traveling on two J-Rigs. You may share the experience with families, couples, friends, solo travelers, and guests of different ages and rafting experience levels.

River days naturally create plenty of shared time through rapids, hikes, meals, and camp, while the size of the J-Rig and the layout of camp also provide opportunities to spread out. Your guides manage the daily rhythm and help everyone understand what comes next.

Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas is the starting and ending point for the Grand Canyon 3-Day Rafting Trip. From the Las Vegas Marriott, Western River coordinates the motorcoach, scenic flight, helicopter transfer to the Colorado River, jet boat exit, and return transportation to Las Vegas.

  • The Las Vegas Marriott Meeting Location

Meet in the lobby of the Las Vegas Marriott, 325 Convention Center Drive, on the morning of your trip. Boarding begins at 5:45 AM, and the motorcoach departs at 6:00 AM sharp. A grab-and-go breakfast is provided that morning.

We recommend staying at the Marriott the night before departure so you're already at the meeting location early the next morning. Western River guests may book rooms at the Las Vegas Marriott (325 Convention Center Drive, Las Vegas, NV) at our exclusive 2027 Western River block rate.  Please do not call the Las Vegas Marriott.  Our discounted rate is only available to guests who use the booking link.

Parking and luggage storage are available through the Marriott. Current rates are listed as you make your online hotel reservation.  We recommend booking early, as availability can be limited during peak seasons.

If you are unable to reserve using our online link, contact Kristy, our specialist at the Marriott, directly at 301.380.7030 or direct email: Kristy.Fukuda@marriott.com. Please allow a 72-hour response window for messages. Be sure to mention the Western River Expeditions Block.

If you stay at another Las Vegas hotel, you'll need to arrange your own transportation to the Marriott and arrive in time for boarding.

2028 Guests- Please note that our 2028 season block will be released in the fall of 2027.

  • Getting From Las Vegas to the River

From the Marriott, the group travels together by motorcoach to Boulder City Municipal Airport. Guests age 18 and older need a photo ID for the flight.

From Boulder City, a charter flight carries you to remote Bar 10 Ranch on the North Rim. Bar 10 is a brief transfer stop on the 3-Day trip. From there, you'll board a helicopter for the flight into Grand Canyon and land at the Whitmore Wash Helipad at river mile 188, where your guides and J-Rigs are waiting. Your 92-mile Lower Canyon river trip begins from there.

  • How to Dress for Your Departure

Arrive at the Marriott dressed for the river, since you'll be boarding your raft not long after your helicopter flight into the canyon.

Wear quick-drying clothing and secure footwear such as sandals with heel straps or appropriate water shoes. A lightweight layer can be useful during the early morning transportation and flight.

Pack the personal items you'll use on the river in a small, soft-sided duffel according to your trip packing list. Extra suitcases and other luggage should remain at your hotel, in your vehicle, or in hotel storage while you're on the river. Western River provides the water-resistant river bags used to protect your personal gear and sleeping equipment.

    See what to wear rafting.

  • Returning to Las Vegas

On Day 3, you'll leave the J-Rig and continue downstream by jet boat to the Pearce Ferry takeout. From there, a motorcoach returns the group to the Las Vegas Marriott, typically by mid-afternoon.

If you plan to fly home that evening, book a flight no earlier than 7:00 PM to allow time for the return drive, transferring to the airport, and possible travel delays. Staying another night in Las Vegas provides the most flexibility after the trip.

GRAND CANYON 3-Day Rafting Trip

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I know if the 3-Day Grand Canyon Rafting Trip is right for me?

The 3-Day trip is a good fit if you want a true multi-day Grand Canyon river experience but do not have a full week available. You'll raft 92 miles through the Lower Grand Canyon, camp beside the Colorado River for two nights, experience whitewater and side-canyon stops, and begin and end in Las Vegas.

The minimum age is 9, making this one of Western River's Grand Canyon options for families with younger children. If you want more time on the river or want to travel the 188-mile Upper Canyon route, compare the 6-Day Grand Canyon Trip and 7-Day Grand Canyon trip.

Call us at (801) 459-3525 to let us help you choose based on your group.

  • How physically demanding is the 3-Day Grand Canyon trip?

No previous rafting or camping experience is required, but this is an active wilderness trip. You should be able to get on and off the J-Rig, walk over sand, rocks, and uneven shoreline, carry your personal river bag into camp, hold securely through whitewater, and follow guide instructions.

Side hikes vary in length and difficulty and are generally optional. Life jackets are required on the river, and guests should be able to move their arms and legs to actively help themselves toward the raft or shore if they unexpectedly enter the water.

If you have questions about mobility, a medical condition or whether the trip is appropriate for you, contact Western River before booking.

  • How intense are the rapids in the Lower Grand Canyon?

The 3-Day route includes 16 named rapids along with long stretches of calmer water. Grand Canyon uses its own traditional 1–10 rapid scale rather than the standard Class I–VI system used on many other rivers.

Before significant whitewater, your guides explain what is coming, how to position yourself, and where to hold on. The J-Rig also offers different seating areas, so you can choose a wetter, more exposed ride or a more protected position farther back.

  • How much time do we spend on the raft each day?

River time varies each day and with conditions.

Day 1 includes the morning motorcoach, scenic flight and helicopter transfer, so you reach the river later in the day.

Day 2 is typically the fullest river day, with rafting broken up by lunch, hikes and other stops. Day 3 includes a final morning on the Colorado before the jet-boat exit toward Pearce Ferry.

There is no fixed hourly schedule. Your guides adjust the day's timing around river conditions, weather, available camps and opportunities to explore along the way.

  • What is a typical day on the Colorado River like?

After breakfast at camp, you'll pack your personal gear, help move equipment back to the J-Rig and head downstream. River time alternates between whitewater and calmer stretches, with stops for lunch and, when conditions allow, hikes or other side-canyon exploration.

Later in the day, the group pulls into a riverside camp. You'll choose a place for your cot while the guides set up the kitchen and begin dinner. Afterward, there's time to relax beside the river before settling in for the night.

  • What is camping like on the 3-Day trip?

You'll camp beside the Colorado River for two nights. Western River provides a cot approximately 12 inches high, a sleeping bag with sheets, a camp chair, and a tent. Tent use is optional, and many guests choose to sleep beneath the open sky when conditions are comfortable.

Camps vary. Some have more sand, while others include rocks or uneven ground. You'll carry your personal gear to your campsite and set up your own sleeping area, with guides available to show first-time campers how the equipment works.

There are no showers on the river, and portable toilet facilities are set up in a private area at camp.

  • How does the 3-Day compare with the 6-Day or 7-Day Grand Canyon trips?

They travel different sections of the Colorado River through Grand Canyon.

The 3-Day trip begins by helicopter at Whitmore Wash at river mile 188 and travels 92 miles through the Lower Grand Canyon before exiting by jet boat to Pearce Ferry. It includes two river nights, begins and ends in Las Vegas, and has a minimum age of 9.

The 6-Day and 7-Day trips begin at Lees Ferry and travel 188 river miles through the Upper Canyon to Whitmore Wash. Both have a minimum age of 12 and give you considerably more time living and traveling inside the canyon.

If available vacation time or traveling with children ages 9–11 is an important factor, the 3-Day may fit better. If your priority is spending nearly a week on the river and traveling the Upper Canyon route, compare the 6-Day and 7-Day options.

  • What's the difference between the 3-Day and 4-Day Grand Canyon trips?

Both trips raft the same 92-mile Lower Grand Canyon route from Whitmore Wash and include two nights of riverside camping. The difference is what happens before you enter the canyon.

On the 3-Day trip, you fly from Boulder City to Bar 10 Ranch and transfer to a helicopter that takes you to the river the same day.

The 4-Day River & Ranch Trip adds the Bar 10 Ranch experience before the river portion begins. If you want the Lower Grand Canyon experience in the shortest available timeframe, choose the 3-Day. If spending additional time at Bar 10 Ranch appeals to you, compare the 4-Day trip.

  • Can we book the 3-Day Grand Canyon trip privately for our group?

Yes. Select 3-Day Grand Canyon departures can be reserved exclusively for a private group of up to 28 guests. Private charters are popular for corporate groups, family reunions, and milestone celebrations.

Contact us directly at (801) 459-3525 to check availability and discuss charter options.

  • What happens if there is a medical situation on the river?

Grand Canyon guides receive extensive preparation for operating in a remote river environment, including over 400 hours of training. Guide teams carry first-aid and emergency communication equipment and have procedures for coordinating outside assistance when needed.

Because Grand Canyon is remote, medical care is not immediately available in the same way it would be in a city or developed recreation area. If you have a medical condition that could affect your ability to participate, discuss it with your physician and contact Western River before booking.

  • What's included in the 3-Day Grand Canyon trip?

The trip includes the transportation and equipment needed from the Las Vegas meeting point through your return: motorcoach transportation, a charter flight from Boulder City to Bar 10 Ranch, helicopter entry to Whitmore Wash, guided river travel aboard the J-Rig, meals and non-alcoholic beverages, standard camping equipment, the jet-boat exit to Pearce Ferry, and motorcoach transportation back to Las Vegas.

Camping equipment includes a cot, sleeping bag with sheets, optional tent and camp chair.

Transportation to Las Vegas, pre- and post-trip lodging, alcoholic beverages, personal items and guide gratuities are not included.

  • What kind of meals are served on this trip?

Your guides prepare all meals while you're on the river. Expect a hot breakfast in camp, fresh lunches served along the river, snacks during the day and a full dinner after reaching camp.

Meals may include familiar favorites such as eggs, pancakes and fruit at breakfast, meats, cheeses, breads and salads at lunch, and hearty entrées with sides and dessert at dinner. Water and lemonade are provided throughout the trip.

If you have dietary needs, let Western River know in advance so the team can explain what can be accommodated.

  • What is the Bar 10 Ranch and what should I expect there?

Bar 10 Ranch sits on the Arizona Strip near the North Rim and serves as the transfer point between your charter flight and helicopter ride into Grand Canyon.

On the 3-Day trip, your stop at Bar 10 is brief. You'll transfer from the airplane to the helicopter that takes you down to Whitmore Wash at river mile 188, where the river portion of your trip begins.

The 4-Day River & Ranch Trip includes the Bar 10 Ranch experience before entering the canyon, so guests who want the additional ranch day and overnight should compare that itinerary with the 3-Day trip.

  • Are there showers or bathrooms at Bar 10 Ranch and on the river?

Restroom facilities are available during your brief stop at Bar 10 Ranch. Once you're on the river bathrooms are portable systems set up by your guides at each camp. Bathing in the river is an enjoyable part of each night in camp.

At camp, guides set up a portable toilet system in a private location. During the day, appropriate stops are made along the river as needed. There are no showers during the two river nights, so guests typically use the Colorado River and personal hygiene items to clean up.

  • Can I drive to Bar 10 Ranch instead of taking the charter flight?

No. Driving to Bar 10 Ranch is not part of the 3-Day trip itinerary. Guests travel together from the Las Vegas Marriott by motorcoach to Boulder City, then take the included charter flight to Bar 10 Ranch and transfer to the helicopter for the flight into Grand Canyon.

Keeping the group on the coordinated transportation schedule ensures everyone reaches the helicopter transfer and river together.
