Whitewater Rafting in Utah
★★★★★ 4.9 OUT OF 2841 REVIEWS
Whitewater rafting in Utah takes you deep into America's most stunning river corridors. The Colorado River carves through Cataract Canyon in Canyonlands National Park, where spring runoff can produce some of the biggest whitewater in the country. On the Green River, Desolation Canyon cuts more than a mile deep through the largest Wilderness Study Area in the contiguous United States. Near Moab, a gentler stretch of the Colorado River winds through Castle Valley on our Southwest Sampler trip, surrounded by towering red rock formations and landscapes made famous by Hollywood films.
Choose Cataract Canyon for the biggest whitewater, Desolation Canyon for a family-friendly multi-day adventure, or the Southwest Sampler to combine an overnight river trip with Arches National Park, an off-road adventure, and a 2-night hotel stay in Moab.
Each of these trips meets in Moab, Utah, and Moab is a destination worth exploring on its own! With Arches and Canyonlands National Parks nearby, along with world-class hiking, mountain biking, off-road adventures, and scenic drives, there are plenty of reasons to extend your stay before or after your river trip. "Class IV-V Rapids, Stargazing, and Desert Magic"
★★★★★
Our recent four-day Cataract Canyon rafting trip had everything, Class IV-V rapids, peaceful floats, hikes, stargazing between canyon walls, morning coffee by the river and desert magic. The three fun and very capable young guides made fabulous campsite meals and kept everyone smiling, moving and safe. The flight back to Moab over Canyonlands NP was a great way to cap off the trip. I highly recommend this trip if you're looking for a fun adventure on the Colorado River.

"The Trip of a Lifetime on the Green River"
★★★★★
What an amazingly wonderful experience! I enjoyed this trip immensely. Our guides, Maya, Bridget, and Alyssa, were technically skilled, phenomenal chefs (food was great and plenty of it), knowledgeable about all things along the Green River, and hostesses who made us all feel like family. They encouraged and gave confidence. The scenery was magnificent and ever-changing; the trip of a lifetime at a reasonable price.

"Western River Made This the Greatest Vacation of My Life"
★★★★★
I'm not particularly outdoorsy... Camping is typically a no-can-do for me, but Western River made this the greatest vacation of my life. My family had an absolutely incredible time. The guides were FUN, KNOWLEDGEABLE, and the most hard-working young people I've seen in ages. They cooked delicious food for us, not the standard camp fare. I wouldn't change a thing. Book it now and make memories to last a lifetime!

Why Choose Western River for Your Utah Adventure

Experienced Guides
Western River’s Utah guides complete 400+ hours of training before guiding guests. Beyond river skills, they learn how to help guests feel prepared, comfortable, and confident while sharing the canyon along the way.

More Time to be Present
Meals, camping equipment, river gear, and trip transportation are already coordinated. With fewer details to manage, you can spend more of your time enjoying the river, the canyon, and the people you came with.

65+ Years Getting Details Right
Six decades on these rivers have taught us that unforgettable trips are built on hundreds of little details, most of which you should never have to think about. It's what makes a trip go from simply good to truly magical.
Is a river rafting trip in Utah right for you?
Most guests are not questioning whether Utah will be beautiful. They are wondering whether the trip will fit their family, their comfort level and the way they actually like to travel.
What if you have never camped? What if the whitewater feels intimidating? Will younger children stay engaged? Will several days outdoors feel like too much?
Utah offers a wider range of river experiences than most people realize. Desolation Canyon and the Southwest Sampler are approachable choices for families and first-time campers. Cataract Canyon is for guests who want bigger whitewater, with a 4-day Classic for a fuller expedition and a 2-day Express for a concentrated experience.
Physical Ability
No previous rafting experience is required. Desolation Canyon and the Southwest Sampler move at a more relaxed pace, with milder rapids. Guests should be comfortable stepping in and out of a raft, walking on sand and uneven ground, holding on through rapids and helping briefly as gear is passed from the boat at camp.
You do not need to be an athlete, and guides are nearby to help throughout the trip. Contact us before booking with any specific mobility or health concerns.
Age Requirements
Desolation Canyon and the Southwest Sampler welcome children as young as 5. Cataract Canyon Classic welcomes guests ages 10 and older from July through September and ages 12 and older in May and June (based on water levels). Cataract Canyon Express requires a minimum age of 12.
There is no fixed upper age limit. Overall health, balance and mobility matter more than the number, and guests in their 70s and 80s regularly join Utah trips.
Swimming Ability
You do not need to be a strong swimmer. Guests wear Coast Guard-approved life jackets whenever they are on the water, and guides explain what to expect and what to do before major rapids.
Anyone particularly uneasy around big whitewater will generally find Desolation Canyon or the Southwest Sampler more comfortable.
Camping Experience
Most guests are not experienced campers. Cots, sleeping bags, tents, and camp chairs are provided, and guides walk everyone through the simple camp routine.
You will sleep outdoors, encounter sand and changing weather, and use portable restroom systems. But many guests who expected camping to be the hardest part end up talking most about dinner beside the river, conversations without phones and nights beneath the stars.
Where else can I raft in Utah?
Utah offers a wide variety of river adventures beyond Cataract and Desolation Canyons, including challenging whitewater, scenic family floats, and multi-day wilderness trips. Some other popular options include:
- Westwater Canyon: A 17-mile stretch of the Colorado River near the Utah-Colorado border, known for exciting Class III–IV rapids. Typically rafted in a day or two, it's a good alternative for those seeking a shorter whitewater adventure. Explore Westwater Canyon with Moab Adventure Center.
- Gates of Lodore: A multi-day journey on the Green River through Dinosaur National Monument, featuring colorful canyon walls, exciting rapids, and riverside camping. Like Desolation Canyon, it combines wilderness scenery with time to explore beyond the river.
- San Juan River: Flowing through southeastern Utah, the San Juan is known for winding desert canyons, Ancestral Puebloan rock art, and generally milder whitewater. Its relaxed pace and cultural history make it another appealing option for families.
- Weber River: Located in northern Utah, the Weber offers shorter rafting trips through Weber Canyon, with scenic mountain views and Class II–III whitewater. It's a convenient option for visitors looking for a half-day adventure near Salt Lake City.
For a longer river, more immersive adventure, Western River Expeditions offers three of the top rafting trips to experience Utah's canyon country. Cataract Canyon combines some of the West's biggest seasonal whitewater with four days exploring Canyonlands National Park. Desolation Canyon brings families into a remote wilderness of sandy beaches, historic sites, and more approachable rapids, with a scenic flight into the canyon. The Southwest Sampler makes it easy to experience more of Moab, combining an overnight Colorado River trip with Arches National Park, an off-road adventure, and hotel accommodations. All three begin and end in Moab, with experienced guides and the major trip arrangements taken care of.

Your Utah River Raft
Cataract Canyon changes throughout the season, so Western River changes the boat to match the river. High water calls for the size and stability of the J-Rig. As the river drops, oar and paddle boats create a more active, technical ride through the same legendary rapids.
Desolation Canyon uses oar boats for a quieter journey, with optional inflatable kayaks available on select departures for guests who want a more hands-on way to explore. Our Southwest Sampler trip uses paddleboats and may include inflatable kayaks.

Western J-Rig (Motorized)
Used on: Cataract Canyon Classic 4-Day (high water)
Used during higher water on Cataract Canyon Classic, Western’s exclusive J-Rig carries 14+ guests and two guides. Forward-facing seating lets everyone watch the canyon unfold, with different seating areas for guests who want more, or less, of each rapid.

Snout Rig (Motorized)
Used on: Cataract Canyon Express 2-Day
Used on the Cataract Canyon Express, the motorized Snout Rig is built to cover the full 100-mile canyon corridor efficiently while still delivering time for an overnight camp and all 30 Cataract Canyon rapids.

Oar Boat
Used on: Cataract Canyon Classic 4-Day (lower water) | Cataract Canyon Express 2-Day (lower-water alternate format) | Desolation Canyon 5-Day
Oar boats are powered and maneuvered by a guide seated at the helm. Guests ride in the bow and stern. On lower-water Cataract trips, they create a more responsive ride through technical rapids. On Desolation Canyon, they offer a quiet, personal way to move through the Green River landscape.

Paddle Boat
Used on: Cataract Canyon Classic 4-Day (lower water) | Cataract Canyon Express (lower-water alternate format only), Southwest Sampler
A paddle boat puts guests on the crew. Everyone paddles together under the guide’s direction, making lower-water Cataract Canyon an active, team-based experience. It is the most participatory option for guests who want to do more than simply hold-on and ride through the rapids.

Inflatable Kayak
Used on: Available on select Desolation Canyon and Southwest Sampler trips.
Inflatable kayaks, often called "duckies," allow the option for guests to paddle alongside or behind the main raft on select Desolation Canyon and Colorado River Castle Valley adventures. They are stable, approachable for first-timers, and offer a closer connection to the water.
Not sure which raft you prefer?
Western matches guests to the right boat format based on water level, group size, and experience. Once you're on the river, guides can help you make the right selection based on your abilities and comfort with adventure. Contact us with any questions.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose between different Utah rafting trips?
Start with the people coming with you.
For families with younger children: Choose a Desolation Canyon rafting trip for a full 5-day wilderness experience or Southwest Sampler for one river night combined with a hotel and guided Moab adventures.
For the biggest whitewater and time to explore: Choose Cataract Canyon Classic. The 4-day format allows more time for canyon hikes, camp life and the gradual buildup to the Big Drops.
For the biggest whitewater in the least time: Choose Cataract Canyon Express. It covers the same 100-mile corridor and all 30 rapids in two days.
For first-time visitors who want variety: Choose the Southwest Sampler. Arches, off-road adventure, hotel accommodations and an overnight river trip are all combined into one planned itinerary.
What are the rapids like on Cataract Canyon?
Cataract Canyon contains approximately 30 Class III-V rapids in a 100-mile stretch of the Colorado River through Canyonlands National Park. The trip builds from calm upper canyon floating on Days 1-2 to the famous Big Drop series on Day 3, three back-to-back rapids that rank among the most powerful in the American West. Rapid intensity varies with river level: at high water, the J-Rig handles the biggest water; at lower water levels, oar and paddle boats provide a more hands-on ride through the same canyon. Either way, guides brief guests before every major rapid and manage every line.
What are the age requirements for rafting Utah?
Age minimums vary by trip. The Desolation Canyon 5-Day and Southwest Sampler 4-Day accept guests as young as 5 years old, making them the best options for families with young children. The Cataract Canyon Classic 4-Day accepts guests 10 and older in July through September, and 12 and older in May and June. The Cataract Express 2-Day and Express Paddle 2-Day require a minimum age of 12 years. If your group spans different ages, Desolation Canyon is almost always the right call, and it remains one of Western's most popular family trips.
Are Utah rafting trips good for beginners or families?
Yes, and two of the four Utah trips are specifically designed for it.
Desolation Canyon on the Green River is Class I-III whitewater, with a minimum age of just 5 years old. It is consistently rated Western River Expeditions' top family trip: the river is calm enough for young children, the five days are unhurried, and the canyon scenery is among the most dramatic in the American West.
The Southwest Sampler 4-Day is also open to guests 5 and older, combining one night on the river with a hotel stay and guided land adventures in Moab , a natural entry point for families or first-timers who want to try the river experience without committing to a full multi-day expedition.
Cataract Canyon 2 and 4 day rafting trips are the choice for guests who specifically want exciting and challenging whitewater. Prior rafting experience is not required.
What is the Desolation Canyon experience like?
Desolation Canyon on the Green River is one of the most remote multi-day river trips in the lower 48. The journey begins with a scenic flight from Moab to the river put-in, dropping you into canyon country that has no road access. For five days you drift through broad canyon walls, past Fremont petroglyphs and outlaw hideouts, camping on wide sandy beaches each night. The rapids are Class I-III, meaning the focus is on scenery, exploration, and wildlife rather than whitewater adrenaline. It's consistently recommended for families, first-timers, and anyone who wants a genuine wilderness experience without extreme rapids.
How are Utah river trips managed and run?
Every Western River Utah trip is fully guided and all-inclusive from start to finish. You meet at a designated Moab location, and from that moment your guides handle everything: river navigation, campsite selection, all meals, and kitchen and bathroom setup. Guests volunteer in a brief fireline to unload gear from the boats at camp, then choose their own spot and set up their cot, a simple 10-minute process. Guides are always available to help first-timers. Every trip includes pre-trip communication with detailed packing lists and logistics, so you arrive knowing exactly what to expect.
What is it actually like to raft Utah's canyons?
Mornings start with hot coffee and breakfast on the riverbank while guides prepare the boats. Days on the water alternate between fast, technical rapids and long drifts through canyon passages so quiet you can hear the river bend. In Cataract Canyon, that builds to a crescendo at the Big Drops, where the canyon narrows and the Colorado unleashes its full force. In Desolation Canyon, the rhythm is gentler: hike out to a petroglyph panel in the afternoon, swim off the raft when the sun peaks, and settle into a beach camp by evening. Phones lose signal within hours of launch, and most guests stop missing them by the end of the first day.
What is camping like on a Utah river trip?
Western provides cots, sleeping bags, tents, and camp chairs on all Utah trips. Camps are chosen by guides to maximize canyon views and morning shade. The night sky inside the park is exceptional: no nearby cities, no light pollution, and a canyon rim overhead that frames the stars. Meals are prepared fresh at camp: hot buffet breakfasts, river lunches with meats, cheeses, and wraps, and full dinners from a camp kitchen that consistently surprises first-timers. On Desolation Canyon trips, broad sandy beaches are the standard campsite, offering space to spread out and explore the surrounding canyon.
Is there hiking on Utah rafting trips?
Hiking is one of the highlights of both the Cataract Canyon Classic and Desolation Canyon trips.
On the Cataract Classic 4-Day, extra days on the river allow side-canyon exploration: the Loop Hike, visits to Lathrop Granaries and pictographs, and, in May and early June, a possible hike to Indian Creek Falls.
All participation is optional, and no trip requires hiking in or out of the canyon at any point. Guides lead every excursion and adjust the pace for all fitness levels.
On Desolation Canyon, hikes focus on Fremont petroglyph panels, visits to Rock Creek Ranch, a historic homestead inside the canyon, and exploration of a natural bridge accessible from river camp.
The Southwest Sampler adds land-based adventures in Moab: the guided Arches National Park tour visits Windows Arch, Turret Arch, Double O Arch, Balanced Rock, and the Delicate Arch overlook, while the 4x4 Hummer tour includes a stop at real dinosaur tracks in the canyon country outside of town.
When is the best time to raft Utah?
Western River operates Cataract Canyon trips from May through September and Desolation Canyon from late spring through early fall. May and early June bring higher water levels and cooler temperatures to Cataract Canyon, which some guests prefer for the bigger rapids and green desert bloom. July through September is peak season: hot desert air, warm water, and consistently clear skies. Summer temperatures in Cataract Canyon regularly reach 100-110°F at river level, and Western provides coolers, shade, and river time to keep guests comfortable. See the weather pages for Desolation, Southwest Sampler, and Cataract Canyon.
What do I pack for a Utah rafting trip?
Packing for a Utah river trip is simpler than most guests expect. The desert environment calls for sun protection above everything else: SPF 50+ sunscreen, sun-protective clothing, a wide-brim hat, and quality sunglasses. Water shoes or sandals with heel straps are essential for the river; camp shoes for evenings. Western provides all major camping gear, including cots, sleeping bags, tents, and dry bags for personal items. Before your trip, Western sends a detailed, trip-specific packing list.
How much does a Utah rafting trip cost, and what's included?
Check the individual trip pages for exact pricing, but trips generally range from $1300 to $3,000. Note that many trips include scenic flights as part of the itinerary.
For example, Cataract Canyon Classic guests also receive a scenic return flight to Moab at no additional cost.
Desolation Canyon guests receive a scenic flight from Moab to the river put-in.
Guests are responsible for personal travel to Moab, gratuities, and personal incidentals.
Are there any 1-day Utah rafting trips available?
Western River specializes in multi-day Utah river expeditions, with the shortest option being the 2-Day Cataract Canyon Express. For single-day Colorado River rafting near Moab, our sister operation Moab Adventure Center runs half-day and full-day guided trips on the upper Colorado River just outside of town, including the Class IV Westwater Canyon 1-day adventure. It's an excellent way to experience the canyon country on a shorter timeline, and the guides and quality of the experience reflect the same Western standard. For a multi-day introduction that's still accessible, the Southwest Sampler 4-Day Vacation Package is the best entry point: one night on the river combined with a hotel stay, guided Arches tour, and a 4x4 Hummer adventure.
