Generations of Stories Begin Here
Multi-Generational Family Rafting Trips
★★★★★ 4.9 OUT OF 2841 REVIEWS
There's something special about seeing three generations of a family share an adventure. Imagine grandparents cheering with their grandkids through a big rapid, parents watching their children discover a hidden waterfall, and everyone gathering for dinner beside the river. These moments become part of your family's story.
Some of the best memories happen between the big adventures. Skipping stones on a sandy beach, laughing about the day's rapids, or listening to Grandpa tell stories beneath the stars. Years later, these are the moments everyone still talks about.
With busy schedules and families spread across the country, getting everyone together isn't easy. A multi-day rafting trip through the Grand Canyon, Utah, Idaho, or Oregon gives your family time to reconnect, explore, and enjoy each other's company, without the usual vacation distractions.
Experienced guides handle the meals and river logistics, leaving you free to enjoy time together. Choose a trip that fits your family's ages and interests, whether you're celebrating a reunion, sharing a new adventure, or starting a tradition worth passing down.
Why generations love rafting trips
- Grandparents, parents, and grandkids share the adventure
- Trips for different ages and whitewater preferences
- Time together away from phones and busy schedules
- Experienced guides, meals, and major logistics arranged
- Choose from riverside camping or lodge accommodations
Why a River Trip Is the Reunion Everyone Remembers

One Shared Adventure
No one wanders off to their own corner. The whole family runs the same rapids, hikes to the same waterfall, and gathers around the same fire at night. The reunion becomes an event, not a rental.

No Phones, No Planning
Most of these canyons have no signal, and the guides handle every meal, the camp, and the gear. Nobody in the family has to be the one organizing, cooking, or refereeing.

Works Across the Age Range
Several trips welcome kids as young as 5, and grandparents ride the same boat. Prefer real beds for the older generation? The Rogue River trip has private lodge rooms each night.

Memories That Bond Generations
Guests tell us the grandkids and the grandparents come home with the same favorite moment. Those are the stories a family retells for years.
Can It Work for Every Age?
Yes. Western River's multi-generational trips are built for a wide age range on the same departure. Three trips welcome children as young as 5, and grandparents regularly join in their 60s, 70s, and beyond. On Grand Canyon trips, our exclusive
J-Rig raft is large and has flexible seating positions in big water. Guides handle the boats, provide life jackets for everyone, and set the pace so mixed-ability groups stay comfortable.
- Minimum age is 5 on the Desolation Canyon, Lower Salmon, and Southwest Sampler trips.
- Western's signature J-Rig raft carries 14 guests with a choice of calmer or bigger-ride seats (min. age 9)
- Guides handle the rapids and provide life jackets; the vast majority of guests are first-timers
- Prefer no camping for the older generation? The
Rogue River Lodge-to-Lodge trip has a private room each night

Plan the Reunion They'll Talk About for Years
You don't need a special occasion to get the whole family on the river, but it is a remarkable way to celebrate one. Bring the grandparents, the grandkids, and everyone in between, and we will take care of the rest. Tell us your family's ages and what you have in mind, and we will match you to the trip, or help you buy out a departure so the reunion is yours alone.

"Ages 9 to 76"

Our first trip was 16 years ago and then we swore to repeat the experience with our grandkids. That time finally came ... Our group of nine ranged in age from 9 to 76 and all felt comfortable and watched over even as we navigated through some mighty rapids.

Family Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Which trip works best for a wide age range?
It depends on the youngest and oldest in your group.
For the widest range, the Desolation Canyon and Lower Salmon trips welcome kids as young as 5 on gentle water.
If the older generation would rather not camp, the Rogue River Lodge-to-Lodge trip gives everyone a private room each night.
For a shorter first trip, the 4 Day Southwest Sampler mixes hotel nights with one night on the river.
Can grandparents and young kids really do the same trip?
Yes, and they do all the time. Guests ride the same boats across the age range, the guides handle the rafts and set the pace, and life jackets are provided for everyone.
One recent group ranged in age from 9 to 76 and traveled together the whole way. The J-Rig raft is large and steady, and you can choose a calmer or a bigger-ride seat depending on who is aboard.
Can we book a private trip just for our family?
Yes. A family can buy out a regular scheduled departure and have the trip to itself, which is one of the most popular ways to run a reunion. It keeps the whole group together with no strangers on the boats, and it is a meaningful way to mark a milestone.
How far ahead should a big group book?
The earlier the better for large groups. Popular summer departures and the trips that welcome the youngest ages fill first, and holding space for a dozen or more people is easiest well in advance. If you have a target month or a specific trip in mind, call us early and we will help you reserve the room you need.
What is included, and do we need any experience?
Nearly everything once the trip begins: professional guides, all meals, camping equipment, rafting gear, and in-trip transportation like helicopters, jetboats, and motorcoaches where a trip uses them. No experience is required. The vast majority of guests, including most first-time campers, have never done anything like it before, and the guides teach you what you need to know along the way.
What is the best time of year for a family reunion trip?
Summer is the most popular window for multi-generational groups, when kids are out of school and the family-friendly trips are running. Early-season departures can have higher minimum ages on some rivers because of water levels, so if you are bringing young children, ask us which departures carry the age-5 minimum for your dates.
