Moab Weather by Month: Temperatures and the Best Time to Visit

Moab sits in the high desert of southeastern Utah, where red rock, two national parks and the Colorado River meet in one compact basin. The best time to visit depends on the experience you want.

  • Choose March through May for mild, sunny days ideal for hiking Arches, biking the slickrock, and touring the parks, but expect cool nights and cold early-season river water.
  • Choose June through August for hot, bright desert days, the warmest river water of the year, and the season when the Southwest Sampler Moab Vacation Package runs.
  • Choose September and October for warm days and crisp mornings, with comfortable weather for the parks and trails. Spring and fall are popular, so plan lodging and activities ahead.

No single month is best for everyone. Spring Moab and midsummer Moab can feel like two different trips, and the same red rock, parks and river are waiting in each. Below, you can compare monthly weather, the summer monsoon and river conditions, and find the best time for your group.

Best Time to Visit Moab: Weather, Air Temperatures & Precip

Choose your travel month around the activities you want to enjoy. Spring and fall offer comfortable weather for the parks and trails, while summer pairs hot desert days with time on the Colorado River. The Southwest Sampler runs June through August. SEPTEMBER 86°/50° Warmer, low flows 0.8 Warm days, crisp mornings and golden light Comfortable days for parks and trails, with cooler mornings

Why Moab Weather Swings From Hot to Cold

Moab sits at about 4,000 feet in southeastern Utah's high desert, with red sandstone canyons nearby and the La Sal Mountains to the southeast. Dry air and clear skies allow temperatures to rise quickly during the day and drop after sunset. A change of 30 to 40 degrees between afternoon and early morning is common.

Low humidity helps perspiration evaporate, but summer heat still calls for planning. Start hikes early, carry plenty of drinking water and take breaks from the sun. Pack a layer for mornings and evenings, even when the afternoon forecast looks hot.

The Colorado River follows a seasonal cycle driven largely by mountain snowmelt. Flows generally rise in spring and early summer, then ease as the water warms. June through August, when the Southwest Sampler runs, brings long river days and an overnight camp beside the canyon walls.

The Best Weather Forecast to Check

Use the Moab, Utah forecast as a general guide. It covers the town, the two national parks and the Colorado River corridor where most guests spend their time, and it is a reliable read for Arches, Canyonlands' Island in the Sky, the slickrock trails and the river days on a Moab Vacation Sampler.

Two things are worth keeping in mind. The La Sal Mountains southeast of town run far cooler and can hold snow well into spring, so a mountain hike is a different forecast than the desert floor. And a river day spans miles of canyon, where afternoon storms can move faster than a town forecast shows. Treat the Moab forecast as your baseline, then pack a layer and a rain shell for the swing. On the river, Western River guides watch conditions and adjust the day's plans when necessary.

What Moab Feels Like Each Season

March to May: The Desert at Its Most Comfortable

Spring is Moab at its most comfortable. Days warm steadily from around 60°F in March to around 80°F by late May, nights stay cool and the desert is ideal for hiking and biking. The La Sal Mountains often still hold snow, a striking backdrop above the red rock, while early-season river water is cold.

Choose spring for: Mild weather across the parks and trails, with a little of everything before the heat.

June to August: Hot Days and the River

Summer is hot and bright, with highs near or above 100°F at the peak. The trade-off is long days, warm river water and the desert at full intensity. This is when the Colorado River earns its place in a Moab trip, and when the Moab Vacation Sampler runs. Plan hikes and biking for early morning, watch for afternoon monsoon storms and let the river handle the hottest hours.

Choose summer for: Warm river days, dawn hikes and the Sampler's all-in-one Moab window.

September to October: Warm Days and Cool Evenings

Fall brings warm days for exploring the parks and cooler evenings back in town. Average highs ease from around 85°F in September to around 70°F in October. Early fall can still work well for river time, but the water cools as the season progresses. September and October are popular months, so book lodging and activities ahead.

Choose fall for: Comfortable hiking weather, crisp mornings and autumn color along the river.

November to February: Solitude in the Red Rock

Winter is cold, calm and uncrowded. Days are often sunny but cool, with daytime highs generally around 30°F to 50°F, and nights drop below freezing. The parks are at their most peaceful and the red rock can wear a dusting of snow. River trips do not run in winter, but for hiking and photography in solitude, it has its own appeal. Check trail conditions for snow and ice before setting out.

Choose winter for: Quiet town, solitude in the parks, crisp-air photography and uncrowded desert hiking.

Pick Your Season to Visit Moab

Moab is not the same place in May as it is in July. The heat, the crowds and the activity mix all shift through the year, but the red rock, the parks and the Colorado River are waiting in every season.

Colorado River Water Temperature Near Moab

The Colorado River near Moab generally runs colder during spring runoff and warms through summer as flows ease. Snowmelt, river flow and recent weather all affect water temperature, so conditions can vary from one departure to the next.

For summer guests, the river offers a refreshing change from the heat of the parks and trails. On the Southwest Sampler’s overnight river trip, calmer stretches allow time for swimming or floating where your guides recommend. Life jackets are required.

Bring the clothing and rain gear on your trip packing list, even when the forecast is hot. For other multi-day trips from Moab, compare Cataract Canyon and Desolation Canyon, each with its own river conditions and departure schedule.

The Summer Monsoon: What Visitors Should Know

Moab has a dry climate, but summer monsoon moisture can bring thunderstorms, most often from July into September. Warm afternoons can build into brief, intense thunderstorms that cool the air, send temporary waterfalls off the cliffs and trigger flash flooding in narrow canyons and dry washes.

Check the forecast before heading out, and remember that rain upstream can affect a canyon even when the sky overhead is clear. Plan ahead: start hikes early, stay out of narrow canyons when storms threaten and keep a rain shell handy. On the river, Western River guides monitor conditions, adjust stops and choose camps with the day's weather in mind.

The Southwest Monsoon in Slickrock Country

Each summer, the North American Monsoon pulls moisture north into Utah's red rock country, roughly July into September. On bare slickrock, rain has nowhere to soak in, so a distant storm can turn a dry wash into a flash flood and pour waterfalls off cliffs that were dry an hour before. It is one of the desert's most spectacular displays and one of the reasons Moab's driest month, June, gives way to its most dramatic skies by midsummer.

Common Weather Questions

  • What is the best time of year to visit Moab?

The best month depends on what you want to do. April, May, September and October offer comfortable weather for hiking and exploring the parks. Summer brings hotter days and is the ideal season to spend time on the Colorado River.

For the 4-Day Southwest Sampler, plan for June through August. The package combines Arches National Park, an off-road safari, two hotel nights and an overnight river trip. Other river trips have their own departure schedules, so check dates before building your vacation around a particular month.

  • Is spring or fall better for visiting Moab?

Both seasons offer comfortable weather for hiking and exploring the parks. Spring brings snow on the La Sal Mountains and a warming desert, while early-season river water is cold. Fall brings cooler mornings and autumn color along the river, with water temperatures gradually dropping as the season progresses.

Both are popular travel seasons. If the Southwest Sampler is the trip you want, plan for its June-through-August departures.

  • When is the best time to do the Moab Vacation Sampler?

The Southwest Sampler runs June through August. June brings long daylight hours and can still have cool river water from snowmelt. July and August usually bring warmer water, hotter afternoons and the possibility of monsoon storms.

Choose dates that fit your group’s schedule and prepare for summer sun. The combination of time in the parks, an off-road safari and an overnight river trip gives you several ways to experience Moab in one four-day vacation.

  • How hot does Moab get in summer?

Summer afternoons can reach or exceed 100°F, especially in July and August. Low humidity does not eliminate the effects of heat, and exposed slickrock offers little shade.

Plan hikes for early morning, drink water regularly and take breaks from the sun. River time can be refreshing, but sun protection and hydration still matter. Nights and mornings are generally cooler with temperatures often in the 60's and 70's.

  • When is Moab's rainy season, and does it get cold at night?

Late-summer monsoon moisture can bring brief, intense thunderstorms, most often from July into September. Rain can cause flash flooding in narrow canyons and dry washes, even when the storm is some distance away. Check forecasts before heading out and keep a rain layer handy.

Expect cooler temperatures after sunset. Summer nights can stay warm, spring and fall nights often need an extra layer, and winter nights commonly drop below freezing. Pack for the overnight low as well as the afternoon high.

  • How cold is the Colorado River near Moab?

The Colorado River near Moab is generally colder during spring runoff and warmer later in summer. Water temperature varies with snowmelt, river flow and recent weather, so a hot afternoon does not guarantee warm water.

On the Southwest Sampler, your guides point out suitable places to swim or float during calmer stretches. Bring the clothing and rain gear on your trip packing list, even for a summer departure.

  • What is the weather like for hiking Arches and Canyonlands?

Spring and fall generally offer the most comfortable hiking weather. In summer, start early and choose walks that fit the heat, distance and abilities of your group. Exposed sandstone can be hot, and shade is limited.

Carry drinking water, use sun protection and check park forecasts and alerts. Canyonlands’ Island in the Sky sits higher than Moab, so conditions can differ from town. In winter, watch for snow and ice on trails and shaded rock.

  • What should I pack for Moab weather?

Bring a brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and lightweight clothing that covers your skin. Add a warm layer for cool mornings and evenings, sturdy footwear with traction, and quick-drying clothing for river days.

Follow the packing list for your booked trip, including its rain-gear recommendations. A two-piece rain suit helps with wind, rain and cooler conditions on the water. Check the forecast before leaving home, then pack for both the daytime high and the overnight low.

Southwest Sampler Reviews

"The Greatest Vacation of My Life"

★★★★★

I booked this Southwest Sampler vacation on a wild and crazy whim for my family. It includes hiking in Arches, a wild sunset ride in a Hummer over some insane terrain, rafting 20 miles on the Colorado River, and camping by the river literally under the stars. Camping is typically a no-can-do for me, but Western River made this the greatest vacation of my life.

"Perfect Adventure with our Grandson"

★★★★★

This was the perfect blend of adventure and comfort for a multi-generational family getaway. Our grandson had an absolute blast—from the thrilling Hummer excursion to exploring the stunning landscapes of Arches National Park. But the crown jewel of the trip for him (and honestly, for us too!) was the overnight rafting trip on the Colorado River. The gentle Class II rapids were just the right amount of excitement, and the calm stretches gave us time to float, swim, and take in the incredible scenery. This was a memory-making trip of a lifetime, and we’re so grateful we got to share it with our grandson.

"Super Organized and Always Felt Safe"

★★★★★

We thoroughly enjoyed the Southwest Sampler. It was just enough for us. The Arches tour was great. ... The Hummer tour with Patrick may have been my kid’s favorite. It was ridiculously cool and the view from the top is amazing! The overnight rafting trip was intense for this Floridian family. The backdrop was gorgeous. The guides running the show were full of energy and smiles. They did an amazing job at doing all the hard stuff and making it look easy. Everything was super organized, we always felt safe, and we had the best time. I would happily use this company again for another adventure.
