Cataract Canyon Rafting Trips

Start with time. If you have 4 days, the Classic is the full expedition, calm upper canyon float, guided hikes, three nights under the stars, and a scenic return flight over Canyonlands. If you have 2 days, the Express covers the same 95 miles and the same approximately 30 Class III–V rapids aboard Western River's high-speed Snout-Rig, with a Day 1 ruins hike, a single overnight, and a ground shuttle back to Moab. Both trips run the full Big Drop series. The Classic gives you more time in the canyon; the Express gives you the same whitewater with less time required. Cataract Canyon includes Class III–IV whitewater and up to Class V rapids during higher flows, with the Big Drops forming its best-known rapid sequence. Conditions vary substantially with river flow. No previous rafting experience is required on a guided Western River trip; your guides explain what to expect and how to ride before the major rapids.

Cataract Canyon runs through Canyonlands National Park in southeastern Utah. It begins at The Confluence, where the Green River meets the Colorado River, about 60 river miles downstream from Moab. From there, the combined river flows through Cataract Canyon's famous whitewater before continuing toward Lake Powell. Both the 2-Day and 4-Day Cataract Canyon trips begin and end in Moab, Utah.

The name comes from the cataracts, or waterfalls, that early explorers and John Wesley Powell's 1869 expedition encountered along this stretch of the Colorado River. Powell's crew named the canyon for the dramatic drops they faced descending the river. The term "cataract" is an older English word for a large waterfall or cascade. Today, those drops are recognized as some of the finest commercial whitewater in North America.

No. Cataract Canyon and the Grand Canyon are separate river canyons. Cataract Canyon is in Utah, inside Canyonlands National Park. The Grand Canyon is in Arizona, beginning at Lees Ferry. Both are carved by the Colorado River but are roughly 300 river miles apart. Guests who have done both often note that Cataract Canyon feels wilder and more remote, fewer visitors, no paved infrastructure, and a desert landscape that sees a fraction of Grand Canyon's foot traffic.

Age minimums vary by trip. The Classic 4-Day: minimum age 10 (July–September) and 12 (May–June). The Express 2-Day: minimum age 12. 

The first day is the canyon revealing itself: calm river, enormous walls, ruins and hikes, and meals that will surprise anyone who expected "camping food." By day two (or later the same day on the Express trip), the rapids arrive fast: loud, powerful, and exactly as good as people say. The nights are some of the quietest most guests have ever experienced, no phones, no light pollution, just the sound of the river and a sky full of stars. Guests consistently report that the experience changes how they think about what a vacation can be. 

Western's Cataract Canyon season runs from May through September. May and June typically bring higher, colder water and more powerful whitewater. Later summer generally brings warmer weather and lower flows, which can change both the character of the rapids and the raft used. The 4-Day Classic also lowers its minimum age from 12 to 10 in July through September.

Western River provides all camping equipment, quality cots, sleeping bags, tents, and camp chairs. Guides select riverside camp locations each evening and handle all logistics. Meals are fully prepared by your guides: hot buffet breakfasts, riverside lunches, and full dinners from fresh ingredients. Most guests who have never camped before report that the camping is more comfortable than expected. The Classic 4-Day includes three nights on the river; the Express 2-Day includes one night.

Western River guides navigate every rapid, prepare every meal, and handle every logistical detail. If your Express 2-Day runs in the alternate jetboat-and-paddle/oar format at lower water, your guides will brief you on paddling technique before the whitewater begins.
