At high water, Specter has waves in size rivaling the ones experienced in Hermit Rapid. With a steep drop, the floodplain on the left has pushed the river along the metamorphic face of the right cliff, making Specter an especially photogenic rapid.
The lower Grand Canyon, as traveled by Western's 3 or 4 day expedition begins at Whitmore Wash (mile 188) and finishes at Lake Mead (mile 277).
