Mile 43.5 - President Harding Rapid
The U.S. Geological Survey expedition led by Colonel Claude Birdseye named this rapid in 1923. Earlier in the trip at Lee’s Ferry, the party learned the news by radio that President Warren G. Harding had passed away. While the expedition was laid over next to a cataract previously named Boulder Rapid, the group decided to change the name to honor the recently deceased president.
