Mile 64.5 - Carbon Canyon
A walk up Carbon Canyon leads river runners through sculpted sandstone walls. Most of the hike takes place in the bottom of the drainage, except for a portion which leads up and around the remnants of a landslide blocking what normally would be a smooth path continuing up the drainage. After the landslide, the canyon eventually flattens out revealing an impressive and colorful view of hills, buttes, and canyons; backdropped by the forested Kaibab Plateau. Here at the end of the canyon fossils of stromatolites -cyanobacteria or blue-green algae colonies- are visible to the keen eyed observer.
