People always ask me, "which is your favorite river trip?" As you can imagine, I like them all, but the one that really speaks to my heart is Desolation Canyon, on the Green River of Utah. This is where I cut my teeth as a river guide, and it’s where I fell in love with my wife.
Desolation Canyon is one of the best family adventure vacations in the world. Everyone in the family is doing the same thing and they all want to be doing the same thing. It has a strengthening effect on families that is unmatched. Mom and dad can’t use their cell phones, and the kids can’t plug in to their game consoles, and after a few minutes, they won’t even want to use any electronics they might have smuggled on the boat.
Of course, Desolation Canyon is first and foremost a whitewater rafting expedition. But it is so much more than that. It is white sandy beaches, hikes to ancient Indian ruins, old homesteads and hermit’s caves. It is a canyon that is over a mile deep and stunningly beautiful. It is fun games with the kids lead by talented and enthusiastic guides. It’s an amazing assortment of food that is prepared fresh at every meal. Singing and joking around the campfire, and even a talent night.
When we say it’s a trip of a lifetime, we are only quoting about every third guest we take down the river. It truly is. You should come see it for yourself.
