Mile 24.5 - 24.5 Mile Rapid (Bert Loper Rapid)

In July 1949 on 65,000 cfs, 79 year old Bert Loper capsized his wooden boat immediately after suffering what appears to have been a fatal heart attack. Following the tipover, Loper’s boat continued floating downstream for several miles before recovery by his party.The boat now rests on a slope at mile 41.5 and is plainly visible from the river, requiring only a short walk to see it.
