Mile 56 - Kwagunt Canyon, Creek, and Rapid

The canyon, creek, and rapid bear the name of Kwagunt, an influential band leader of the Southern Paiutes during the late 1800s. Southern Paiutes and other related Native American groups occupied much of the Great Basin province roughly 1,000 years ago. During this time they expanded their territory into the greater desert southwest and Grand Canyon region. Pre-historically, Paiute bands differed starkly in lifestyle, culture, and heritage from contemporary southwestern puebloan groups.
