Mile 68-72 - Furnace Flats

Due to the soft and erosive nature of the surrounding Dox Sandstone, the canyon opens up for about four miles before beginning to tighten up again as the riverside geology becomes harder. Because of the openness of the canyon here, and the access to the north rim, remnants of Native American activity is prolific in the area. The increased width of the canyon walls also opens up the heavens to the naked eye, making late-night star-gazing a special treat.
