Just Do It!!!

| October 23, 2011

Should I, shouldn't I?  I had some serious reservations about the cost of this trip and about my low boredom threshold.  The thought of being trapped on a small space with 15 strangers with nothing to do but stare at rock walls for 6 days did give rise to a very brief pause before I pressed the reservations button.

In reality, the walls of the Grand Canyon are ever changing and simply mesmerising and passing time with the other people on the trip was an unexpected pleasure.

The white water was pleasant through to thrilling.  Lava Falls Rapid is an adrenalin junkie's dream.  Sleeping under the Milky Way at night and waking up to the Canyon at sunrise every morning was just plain, pure, unadulterated bliss.

There is one bit of information that didn't seem to come out in the other reviews I read and I read dozens.  Fair warning: Women are "expected" to pee in the river during daylight hours and that water is cold even at the end of August.  But, by day 3 even that seemed the norm and besides most of us were dunking ourselves regularly just to cool off.

Our guides, Ben and Newty, were simply brilliant.  They treated everyone with good natured respect.  They were informative, unfailingly helpful, enabling, supportive and seriously good fun.  They encouraged us to experience as much as we felt comfortable with; all the time keeping a watchful eye out for everyones' safety.  And they weren't just pretty faces...boy oh boy, could they cook!!!

Was it worth the money? Every penny! Would I do it again? In a heart beat! To anyone out there wondering, "Should I, Shouldn't I", all I can say is JUST DO IT!!!
